Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Today marks the 50th Anniversary of the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald and her 29 member crew. The Great Lakes residents hearing the reports coming in the night of that storm have never forgotten it. This is my tribute to what is so much more than just the iconic ballad.

On the night the Edmund Fitzgerald vanished beneath the fury of Lake Superior, Whitefish Point stood just 17 miles away. Battling hurricane-force winds and snow, the lighthouse and Coast Guard station became the focus of desperate search efforts. Fifty years later, this windswept shore remains both a beacon and a memorial to the men that died that night.
