The original name of this 16th century fortress was Saint Lawrence of the Dry Head, It was built to defend th entrance to the Tagus estuary. Its rounded walls increased its capacity to withstand gunfire and are typical of teh Renaissance penchant for the geometrical forms thought at the time to be the most perfect.
