Stranger #18 - Joseph

Last week I went back to work after being off for the summer and there was a new face. This is Joseph and he just moved from Detroit. He's getting accustomed to the California heat and... all the smoke from the fires we just had over the past few weeks. I'm sure it must have reminded him of what he used to do... fight fires... for 15 1/2 years.

I admire fire fighters because so many times they put their lives on the line to save others. I often think about how many gave their lives in NYC... 8 years ago on tomorrow (09/11/09). It's hard to believe that it's been that long.

Anyway, I thought I would ask Joseph about some of his most memorable times fighting fires. I thought he would tell me about some heroic effort... maybe saving a few folks. Instead, he told me about how many burning cars he'd seen. "So many people just let their car parts get old and worn out... so they would catch fire," he says. "We would just let them burn." I'm guessing it was no use saving cars falling apart.

Although Joseph has a wonderful smile, I like this shot of him looking across the parking lot. Sort of reminds me of shots I have seen of fire fighters. It is indeed a pleasure to meet Joseph and add his portrait to the 100 Strangers Project.

This picture is #18 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers/
