California Red Tide Season
Red tide is an interesting phenomenon in southern California. When it is dusk or dark and when the waves wash along the shore, one can see what appears to be light in the water. It turns out that it is a harmless type of plankton or dinoflagellates. The specific name is Noctiluca scintillans. Although this photo does not show the glowing waters, I could see the slight light within the ocean waters the day I took this photo. When this plankton gets in the sand, one can walk on the sand and it will glow for a second or two. It's pretty cool.
