Nacreous cloud
Seen recently in Lapland where we went to see Santa. Also called Mother-Of-Pearl clouds, they are high altitude clouds which give a stunning painterly effect when seen either sunrise or sunset (this was the latter).
I was staring at them transfixed as we disembarked from the coach at the airport, everyone else traipsed into the terminal.
Never seen anything like this but apparently only really seen at high lattitudes as it has to be really cold to form the necessary small ice crystals
