Rum Bucolic Ape
Stourhead
It is a classic view of a classic place. The gardens of Stourhead are world famous and just over an hour from Bristol.
The place is built for photography. Even on a grey day. Apparently, I should be grateful. Harpazo Hope says I should consider a grey sky is just like a giant softbox.
This view shows the Palladian Bridge in the foreground (built 1762) and the Pantheon (1753) is a mini-version of the original in Rome. The lake is artificial too; built around 1754.
But for me, it is the specimen trees around the lake that are the show stealer. They were in full autumnal show; the large tulip tree to the right of centre was particularly glorious.
There are apparently 90 000 trees in the grounds; some are rare and some are particularly fine examples. 18 of them are judged monumental trees (on what criteria I don't know).
I love big trees, many of these majestic beasts are over 100' (33m) tall. They make me smile. Dunno why.
