Abraham's Faith
"When Abram prostrated himself, God spoke to him:
“My covenant with you is this:
you are to become the father of a host of nations.
No longer shall you be called Abram;
your name shall be Abraham,
for I am making you the father of a host of nations"
– Genesis 17:3f, which is part of today's First Reading at Mass. With profound faith in God's promise of fatherhood, Abraham was even willing to offer his only son, Isaac, to God in sacrifice because he knew that God would be faithful to his Covenant and not leave Abraham without an heir.
My sermon for today which looks at God's Covenant with Abraham and how it relates to us can be read here.
This is a detail from a 4th-century early Christian sarcophagus in the Vatican Museum.
