Lord of Hosts
"O LORD of hosts, who triest the righteous,
who seest the heart and the mind,
let me see thy vengeance upon them,
for to thee have I committed my cause."
- Jeremiah 20:12, which is part of today's first reading at Mass.
Detail from the west window of Fairford parish church which shows Christ as judge, who dispenses peace and justice, and who is surrounded by a host of angels and saints, and flanked by Our Lady and St John the Baptist. The window was installed c.1500-15 under the direction of Barnard Flower, glazier to Henry VII, but the west window was much damaged in a storm in 1703. Between 1861-62, the window was 'restored' by replacing the entire upper half of the great west window, dedicated to the Last Judgement, with a new if faithful version based on what had survived the 1703 storm.
