St Laurence of Rome

Today, 30 June, is the memorial of the first martyrs of Rome. This image of St Laurence (also spelt Lawrence) from his church in Chicheley may be seen to represent them.

St Laurence was one of the seven deacons of Rome and was martyred in 258. He holds the gridiron which is the instrument of his martyrdom and the palm which symbolises the righteousness and glory of the martyr-saint.
