Panoramic Inside Kennin-ji

Kennin-ji is a historical Zen Buddhist temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the so-called Kyoto Gozan or "five most important Zen temples of Kyoto".

 

The temple was founded in 1202 by the priest Yousai (1141-1215). Yousai is known for introducing the Zen sect and the tradition of drinking tea into Japan. He is the founder of the tea ceremony and for encouraging the cultivation and consumption of tea in Japan.

 

Kenninji belongs to the Rinzai Zen sect.
