I had admired an amazing photo of the Michigan Bean Elevator (by Jim Howe on Flickr) and in reading about this iconic landmark in Saginaw Michigan and learning that it was the largest bean elevator in the United States, I decided to drive a couple of hours to Saginaw to see if for myself. As I arrived at the elevator, I found that its demolition was in progress! As I was taking photos, several people stopped to talk with me and described their sadness at seeing this iconic structure being demolished. Many of the people were elderly and had known this building their entire lives. Although just a simple bean elevator, this structure was obviously part of many people’s histories either through employment or or as a visual landmark. It is sad that the city has decided to remove the old Jackrabbit Bean elevator
