LaSalle

A hanging sign denotes the LaSalle station on the Blue Line subway. Although these types of signs were once common in the Red Line and Blue Line subway stations, they remain at only a few.

The Lasalle Station on the Blue Line opened in 1951, but the Art Deco/Art Moderne style evoke a period of some 20 years prior to this (Art Deco/Art Moderne styles were very popular between the 1920s and the 1940s). That's because both the Red and Blue Line subways were planned in the 1930s, but because of materials shortages during World War II, construction of the latter was delayed for many years.

According to Graham Garfield's site, www.chicago-l.org "A specially-designed Futura typeface was used throughout the subway backlit glass signs."
