Red-throated Ant Tanager - Habia fuscicauda - Adult Male at Chan Chich, Belize

An adult male Red-throated Ant Tanager - Habia fuscicauda - at Chan Chich Lodge in western Belize. This bird was close, the image is barely cropped, so the depth of field is a thin sliver of space, just enough to capture the face. The charcoal/grey area between the bill and eye (the lores) distinguishes this species from the similar Red-crowned Ant Tanager.

In walking the trails at Chan Chich we found that even at the quietest times of day one bird or another would eventually pop into view. Red-throated Ant-Tanager was the classic example of this type of sighting - chattering family groups obvious by the trail side. Other birds that we would happen across fairly frequently included Stub-tailed Spadebill, Spot-breasted Wren and Hooded Warbler.

As their name suggests, this species has an affinity for following Army Ant swarms. Although we did find them away from the ants this one was photographed as it hovered around a column of the forest marauders.
