Jungle Cat | Felis chaus on a Night Drive

Spotlighting can be an extraordinary way to see mammals, but Ranthambhore National Park does not permit visits after sunset. So we contracted a driver to tour us around the fields and villages near the Pugmark (our resort), outside the protected zone. The area is very built up and densely populated; I didn't have super high hopes.

As it turned out, the 2 hour drive was very productive:

1 Indian Hare

1 Jungle Cat

1 Indian Fox

1 Golden Jackal

4 Nilgai

The Jungle Cat above was happily hunting in the rubbish strewn ditch at the edge of a small town. My sense is that humans and wild animals have a long history of sharing the same space in India.
