Badwater Patterns

Honeycomb patterns in the Badwater salt crust. I was completely dumbfounded by these, as they span for miles in every direction without any clue as to how they occur.

 

I've looked them up since getting home, learning that the patterns are apparently caused by "freeze-thaw cycles" that push up the salt crust. That still doesn't leave me any less dumbfounded, so I'm chalking it up as one of the many examples of weird shit that happens only in Death Valley...
