Syke's Cut. Little St. George is in the background. Formally "Government Cut," it was built to provide boating access to dock owners on the bayside to reduce travel time to the Gulf. On October 22, 2005, St. Geroge Lighthouse (built in 1852 & one of just a handfull of historic lighthouses remaining in FL) collapsed after indirect hits from hurricanes and, some speculate, beach erosion caused by the change of currents around the newly formed LSGI produced by the cut. The lighthouse is currently being rebuilt in the center of SGI.
