eventually pose threat to unity and integrity of the country. Therefore, the report should be rejected in the national interest. Goons of the Sangh have been in the forefront of attacks against scheduled caste and scheduled tribe populations and women across the country. Social boycott of dalits, harassment and rape of dalit women, brutal murders and mutilation and destruction of property of dalit settlements and moral policing of womens mobility and dressing thus form the staple in the sanghs social-justice package, ranging from Mangalore to Bolangir. With elected representatives in assembly after assembly (Gujarat followed by Karnataka) caught watching pornography, the BJPs double standards on gender remains ridiculously strangled between Bharat Mata and porngate, to say the least. One of the biggest attacks on democratic rights of unionization in the recent times have been reported in Himachal Pradesh where student union elections in universities were forcibly banned, and protesting students arrested and sent to jail in hordes. The leadership of the SFI was implicated in false cases and its leaders at various levels were put behind bars. In Hamirpur, the SFI leadership was booked under section 307 three times within a week! ABVP goons launched a physical attack on SFI CEC member and Himachal Pradesh state president, Vikram Singh, when he was campaigning at Dharamshala in Kangra district. The politics of polarizing the working class on ethnic and regional lines continues to be the main plank of organizations within the Hindutva umbrella, as they variously flex their muscles against Hindi speaking workers in Maharashtra demanding their ouster from the state, .
The record of the BJP led governments are nothing short of exercises in hollow advertising. The bogeys of vibrant Gujarat and Madhya Pradeshs the heart of incredible India have run out of steam with human development indicators across BJP ruled states consistently recording abysmal lows. According to the India State Hunger Index 2008 of the International Food Policy research Institute (IFPRI), Gujarat ranks behind Orissa, as 13th among 17 major states, just above Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, all four BJP ruled states!! The role of the BJP in aiding corruption and corporate loot cannot be hidden behind the hue and cry it is raising against the corrupt ways of the Congress. The unabashed support provided by the Karnataka government to the Reddy brothers, notorious for their mafia-like operations across coal mines in south India, coupled with chief minister Yedyurappas own dubious involvement in land scams leave little room for the BJPs vain somersaults in moral politicking. It doesnt take much political memory to recollect the embarrassments of the defense and coffin scams during the NDA regime. It also leaves much to be desired by way of credibility in its ostensible support to to Anna Hazares anti-corruption campaign, and smacks of political opportunism of the worst kind. .
The repeated exposure of the bankruptcy of Hindutva politics is but a vindication of this steadfast resolve, and consistent campaigns and political pressure mounted on the BJP-VHP-RSS-ABVP by left and democratic forces. The history of the resistance to the Hindutva forces in JNU has been a golden chapter in such struggles. Right from the early nineties, during the Sanghs early rise to prominence, the SFI has fought against the dangerous attempts to saffronise the syllabus of this university, moves against the implementation of SC/ST/OBC reservations, attempts to scuttle the formation of the GSCASH, or moves to fan up communal tensions on campus in the name of cricket. At the height of the NDAs attacks against higher education and attacks on minority rights, our campus rallied behind SFI led unions in vehemently fighting these tendencies and winning historic struggles, for hostels, for student rights, for democratic institutions like the GSCASH, for a peaceful and friendly atmosphere in this university. The strength of the JNU movement resisted the rewriting of history syllabi in the nineties. Today, with the same grit, we will resist the attempts to remove Three Hundred Ramayanas or Such A Long Journey from university syllabi across the country. We were in the streets of Ahmedabad in solidarity with the victims of the Gujarat riots. Today, we will be on every street corner against a fake encounter, against another Ishrat Jahan, another Batla House. Party offices of left forces are considered safe havens during periods of communal tension across the country, and JNU has proudly upheld this tradition. As SFI gears up for its XXXII Unit Conference, it steels its resolve to dedicate all its energies in the fight against communal forces, for secularism and democracy, and appeals to the student community to join hands towards this end. .
