Against Fee Hike and Commercialisation in Campus: The circular from the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) dated 12 September 2009 came as an assault on student rights and the very idea of an affordable and quality education. Through the proclamation of 100 days reform, the MHRD has promised a revolutionary change in education policy. In keeping with these reforms, the central government has issued a circular calling for a mandatory 15% cut in budgetary allocations to Universities and higher learning. The circular even states that resources will not be provided for basic necessities like books, libraries, seminars, messes and laboratories! Universities and Colleges have been directed to increase student fees to meet these costs and extract user charges for hostels, electricity and water from students. It is evident that the intention of these reforms is to free the State from any responsibilities towards education and transfer it all into the hands of the private corporations. As a result, students from deprived backgrounds will now be deprived of education through this well-calculated move. These intentions are clearly reflected in the Right to Education Bill 2008 in its present form. In the wake of the fee hikes and fund-cuts in higher education, AISA organized a MASS HUNGER STRIKE on 27 28 October 2009, demanding roll back of hike in examination fees and increased utility charges and a genuine right to education. A signature campaign was also carried out in this regard, which saw commendable support from the student community. .
Fighting against the backdoor entry of foreign money into academics and supporting the struggle to overthrow the European study centre from the Sociology Department, AISA registered its protest along with other progressive forces in the campus. .
The increase in bus and metro fares in the past few months has been a major concern for students commuting on a daily basis in buses and metro. In this regard, AISA undertook a signature campaign, demanding the reduction of the fares and introduction of a students metro pass and validation of the bus passes in the private buses as well. As part of this campaign, AISA organized a demonstration, a road blockade and formation of a human chain in front of the Delhi University metro station. .
For Democratic Decision Making in the University: The implementation of the Semester system in Delhi University has been a matter of serious concern. The Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University has decided to implement the semester system from the academic session starting July 2010. This is a decision he has taken in spite of Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) unanimously opposing this move. The DUTA has pointed out the increased difficulties that the semester system would bring about without addressing current infrastructural problems. However, bypassing all opposition the Vice chancellor is bent upon to implement the semester system without considering the existing inconsistencies. Appealing to the student community and all democratic and progressive forces to come out against this undemocratic imposition of the semester system and to ensure quality and inclusive education in DU, AISA organized a Public meeting on 5 March 2010. An intensive discussion on the pros and cons of proposed framework of semester system ensued between students and members of the teaching fraternity. .
For a Democratic, Secular and Egalitarian India: During the last few years, AISA has undertaken numerous other campaigns on the level of the campus and society through public meetings, protests and demonstrations. When chauvinistic forces attacked north Indian students appearing for exams in Maharashtra or when Indian students were being racially targeted in Australia, it was AISA, which raised the banner of revolt. AISA has resolutely campaigned against the govt policy of SEZ, corporate grab of land and resources and forced eviction of peasants and tribals. When Israel launched attacks on Palestine, AISA protested against this imperialistic war. We launched a massive Chattra Adhikar Abhiyan against the virtual emergency imposed in campuses through the Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations. .

All India Students Organisation (AISA) was formed in 1990. From the outset, it has defeated the communal politics in its bastions at Kumaon University, Allahabad University, and BHU. Opposing fee hikes, privatization and commercialisation of education; standing against communal hate mongering, patriarchy, caste atrocities, regional chauvinism, anti-people economic policies, working towards the basic rights of education and employment these are all central to the agenda of AISA. AISA emphasizes solidarity of the students movement with the struggles of the working class, especially with the revolutionary peasant struggles in our country. It integrates itself with all democratic movements of the Indian people. It is in keeping with these principles that AISAs leader and two-time president of JNUSU, Comrade Chandrasekhar went to work among the rural agrarian poor in Siwan in Bihar. There, the hired henchmen of the RJD MP Shahabuddin murdered him. We are committed to upholding the revolutionary inheritance of Bhagat Singh and comrade Chandrashekhar. .
All across the world today, students and young people are out on the streets agitating against anti-people economic policies and imperialist wars. They are saying, Another world is possible for our dreams.
