Finn Resistance Against Communalism .

The ~ommunal~fascist f9rces whic.h gained strength in the country during the 1990s and the early 2000s were;resisted in the.campus by SFI-lec;f Unions. Attempts to saffronlse education, reflectea in moves like the proposal to introduce eot~rsessuch as ·Hvman consciousnesf as .part of the X Plan Proposals in 2001 , were defeated by the strength of themoveme·nt le(fby·the ~Fl-Ied Union. There was even the a1tempt by the RS$ to target JNU and the $Fl-Ied JNUSU as ac;;en of 151 agents". There was an incident of violence during an lndo-Pak Mushaira held in JNI,J on 29 April 20()0, wherethree qrunken disrllptorq {one of whqm brandished a r~volver) were beateft,up only to later fin9 that two of them were Army.

officers: The Sangh Parivar then demanded that the 'lSI activities' in JNIJ be investigated, and the 'Bahrf Commission ofEnquiry' was s'.

et up in pliant response to this absurd demand. Such targeting, however, was defeated by the steadfastresistance of the stuc;fents' movement led by the SFl-Ied JNUSU. .

Struggles for Gender Justice .

The struggle fer an institution to deal with cases of sexual harassment took off in JNU in 1996-97, as the ABVP-winning amajority in the JNUSL) Council that year had led-to a steep rise in instances of violence...and -s.exual -harassmem in. the-campus. The entire gender-sensitive,· secular and democratic minded student community rallied behind the SFI~JNUSUin protests and a prot~acted fight for justice, and the Vishaka judgement of the Supreme Court in 1997 bolster~ the . struggl~.! On the eve of th~ lryternational Women·~ Day in 19~8 on behalf of the JNUSU, a state leveJ, COflV~tion-(inaugurated by Capt. Lakshmi S.ehgal) was held, where the UnioR presented a students'_draft for a Committee AgainstSexual Harassment. Afte.r dis·c~ssions and agitations that lasted for many months, the GSCASH was set up on March 8,.

1999. This hist9ry of the JNUSU's leading role in the formation of the GSCJXSH assumes ,particular significance at a timewhen the GSCASH has come '~nder-attack by the very JNUSU office-bearers who are supposed to defend it.
