autonomy of GSCASH and thereby strengthen it in the face of the current assaults. .

Only in ~he .last one year we/have w'itnessed three consecutive such .instances of brazen scuttling of justice by the adm·inistration, In the firS"t instance, Prof. Nayar, a CSMCH faculty member found guilty of sexual harassment by the GSCASH was simply let off wtth a golden handshake by offering him a 'compulsory (read voluntary) retirement' as the EC did not wish to "defame a senior professo~. In the second instance, Prof. Kundu, a CSRB faculty member, again clearly found guilty of sexual harassment by GSCASH is being shielded by the EC that is oent upon· constituting another enquiry of its own in the name of a 'Three Member Committee" to overturn the GSCASH verdict. And in the third instance today, we find the administration going a step further and promoting a ...., . .

faculty member to the post of Dean of SIS, against whom there is an ongoing GSCASH enquiry. In the face of protests and confrontation from the student community, the administration shamelessly feigns ignorance abol:Jt such an enquiry even as they rejected the open letter to VC from a large group of faculty members who raised objection to such a promotion. While on this occasion we hear of concerns such as "this being his last chance to Dean-ship'", what is conveniently sidelined is the question of justice. That is, the promotion of an accused in a case of sexual. -harassment ~to the post of Dean implicitly makes him a member of the s.pme EC where he would be placed in a .

pqsrtion to·pr~side upon his own case. Alongside, in these cases we have witnrssedJhe uqliest manifestations-of slander campaigns, maligning. character assassination, hate-mails, poster and pamgh!ets that were not only targeted against the woman complainant, but also the institution of GSCASH. Finally, this entire pattern of letting off, sh'ieldi.ng ·and promotion has in every step spelt an increasing violation of the fundamental right to justic~, undermining of the institution of GSCASH and the patriarchal admjnistration gaining ground. .

Today-, as we-stand at this crossroads, we h·ave beh'ind us a serie$ of protests with no concrete outcome; complicity from our last elected union in the shielding of Nayar; a criminal silence on the case of Kundu at crucial junctures interspersed by tokenism. The union in the last six months has done NOTHING towards the implementation of the UGBM resolution that was unanimously passed to make GSCASH decisions binding upon the administration. Even after rejecting the 'Three Member Committee" on th.e Kundu case more than a month back, the JNUSU is clearly reluctant to wage any meaningful struggle to confront the administration. The absolute lack of vision an the part of the unioh was evident in the forgotten one day university strike call~d on 3010 January that was purportedl-y to mark the beginning of an ''inten·sified" stru~g.le after which nothing followed till date. Such inactions, oomp).icity and silenees of course ultimate,ly add to the strength of the administration as is obvious today -in the SIS case where it .
