It is intportant to note that after the ABVP came to power in the campus the attention of JNUSU was shifted to .
campus-centric issues rather than focus.ing on issues only related to the world such as Palestine and the so called struggle of various obscure groups worldwide. The ABVP understood that the issues affecting students need to be .
addressed outright and therefore it was fundamental for us to address these issues first rather than engage in .
obfuscating students' issues with international leftist orientation. .
In the year 199o-97 the AB\·p hJd fielded cartaidatc~ in the dcctions and had come out victorious winnin!! 3 important posts such as the Vice-President. General Sccrctarv and Joint Secr~tarv. Our Presidential Candidate Pushkar Mishra lost by just 4 votes in a closely contested election. During those days communication was not at all .
easy as now and therefore there was only l phone in every hostel and it had an indirect line which made it difficult I .
for the students to communicate with their families. The ABVP realized that the issues ofphones and communication .

was more important than what was going on in Pa,lestine and therefore they n1anage~ to make all the lines direc(so· .
that the problem of communication could be solved completely. Thi~·.may seem to be nothing-in compared to the .
f .
ritualistic hunger strikes and juloos but indeed for the students this was mo·re important to have easy communicatiQn. .
In the vear 1996-97 there were no optional courses such as Economics and Computer science that were availaofe to the students_of the SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES. The ABVP realized that these two subjects are most important in .
the modem world and therefore strug~lcd and fought for the inclusion of these two subjects for lhe students of the .
SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES. Finally after a long struggle ofABVP these two subjects were included in the course .
.
and after that the students were allowed to take these subjects as optional course. Once again the ABVP made issues .
related to the students as its focal point ratht;r than some issue related to international communist struggle! .
In the year 2000-01 one ofour candidates Sandip I\lahapatra also won the post ofthe President ofthe J!\:USU an(flh .

In view of the constant and haggling issues over withdrawal of money the ABVP also decideo that there had to be .
some easi~r way to do it. As a result ofwhich it also compelled to administration to install an ATM machine near the .

Godavari and Periyar hostel. This machine has now become a lifeline for students and it was the wisdom of the ABVP which struggled for this basic thing which today is nlaking withdrawal ofn1oney easier. .
In the same year in 2000 the ABVP also spearheaded the campaign for getting a speed post service. It must be remember that during those days students relied on the postal services for communication. After our campaign for .
the startine ofspeed post sen·ice in our campus, the sen·ice finallv started and todav the students can a\·ail this service which has made it easier for them. The ABVP once more fought for the real and most important issues of .
the students rather than misleading them and failing their aspirations. .
In 2000 once ntorc the ABVP managed to shift the Bus pass ~ounter from the JNU old campus to ·the new campus near TEFLA, during the same time the 507 number bus was started and even the 615 bus was regularized .
