61h December is the death anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the relentless crusader against Brahmlnical caste oppression and the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. And, it is also on 6'h December that Sangh Parivar mobs demolished the Sabri Masjid in Ayodhya 18 years ago. Babasaheb spent his entire life fighting for an egalitarian and secular India, fighting against the very social forces that the Sangh Parivar represents. It is probably no coincidence that the Sangh Parivar chose Babasaheb's Mahaparinlrban day as the occasion on which to orchestrate this horrific, shameful and blatant attack on India's democratic and secular fabric. .
Since the horrific demolition of the Sabri Masjid, we 11ave time and again seen the RSS·BJP-VHP combine wreck havoc in the country, through a sustained campaign of violence and communal hate mongering. Immediately after the demolition of the mosque (which itself was the culmination of Advani's communal Rath Yatra that left a bloody trial wherever rt went all over the country), these communal fascist goons orchestrated riots across the country. In Mumbai alone, at least a thou-sand people were killed in the riots in December 1992 and January 1993 (according to the oHicial data, which is definitely a gross underestimate). Ten years later, in February 2002, the Sangh Parivar implemented one of the worst communal genocides in India's history. Thousands of Muslims in Gujarat were raped and killed, with the ruling SJP government overseeing this communal pogrom. And in Augu~t 2008, the Sangh Parivar started yet another genocide which lasted several months-this time targeting Christians in Kandhamal, Orissa. .
The Sabri Masjid demolition, the Gujarat riots and the Kandhamal massacre are merely the highlights of the Hindutva brigade's communal campaign which is constantly at work. Since 1925, when the RSS was formed, this campaign has been continuously trying to spread hatred. intolerance and violence against minority communities. They do not lose a single opportunity (and in tact they manufacture opportunities!) to spread their communal message-so much so that the communal 'commonsense' peddled by them has become deeply ingrained not just in our society. but also in our political and social institutions which are supposed to safeguard India's democratic and secular ethos. .
It is now 18 years since the Babri Masjid was demolished-and the perpetrators of this crime are yet to be punished. The Liberhan commission came out with its belated report indicting some BJP and Sangh leaders, but even after the report was tabled, the UPA Government has done nothing to ensure justice for the demolition. Similarly, the main perpetrators of the Bombay riots of 1992·93 have escaped justice, and are still roaming free to spread their venomous communal message. Successive Congress governments in Maharashtra have shamefully failed to act on the recommendations of the Srikrishna Commission which has indicted not just BJP and Shiv Sena leaders but several police officers and other representatives of the state. .
Earlier this year, the Allahabad High Court came out with a stunning verdict in the Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid case -stating wilhout any conclusive evidence that the contested land was the birth place of 'Ram lalla Virajman'! Bydismissing the claim of the Sunni Waqf Board, the Allahabad HC essentially legalized. justified and strengthened the very ideological basis of 'belief' which led to several patently illegal acts such as the installation of Ram idols within the Sabri Masjid premises and the demolition of the mosque in 1992. Thi.? verdict has set an extremely dangerous precedent in the country, wherein legal disputes can be solved on the dubiO!!S...P.Oiitically-motivated clajms of 'belief and 'faith', rather than on the .
basis of facts and evidence! And in yet again instance, the Special Investigation Team (SID appointed by the Supreme Court to look into the role of the Gujarat government in the Gujarat riots has g'iven_a clean chit to the Narendra Modi -despite ample evidence to the contrary. Clearly, the rot runs deep-and with even the so-called secular forces like the Congress indicted in this project of destroying our secular fabric, the challenge in front of the secular and democratic forces in tl1e country is formidable. Today, exactly 18 years after the demolition of the Sabri Masjid, and as a tribute to Babasahed Ambedkar and his attempts to institutionalize democratic and secular values in India, let us pledge never to forgive and never to forget the Sabri demolition, the Gujarat riots and other communal genocides. 6ltl December 1992, February· March 2002 and August 25lll 2008 are remainders for what these communal fascist forces are capable of. They should serve not just as remainders, but also as warnings to the democratic sections in society for what can happen if they do not give a fitting rebuff to these communal forces. Tonight, as we commemorate Sabasaheb's secular legacy, AISA 1nvites you to a film screening tonight (December 6th) from 9.30 pm onwards at Ganga hostel, where Anand Patwardhan's famous film 'Father Son and Holy War' witl be screened.
