"As a Muslim, I would like to convey a message to my entire countryman and especially, my own communrty that some politically motivated people are trying to make an emotive issue out of Vande Mataram. a gem of a song and perhaps that song that in my view should have been the National Anthem in place of Jana Gana Mana" --Firoz Bakht Ahmed, Educationist and grandnephew of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad.(August25, 2006 Pioneer) .

Anandamath is set in a Bengal ravaged by the famine of 1770. But as noted historian Sumit Sarkar (no admirer of Sangh and Hindutva Forces) has put rt "Such was the situation of Nawabi tyranny that the whole story becomes one of aggression, brutality and violence by Muslims" --Sumit Sarkar, (31st August, 2006-Times of India) .

The song Vande Mataram is the National Song of India. It is older than Jana-Gana-Mana and was .
composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhya in 1876 but actually appeared in his novel Anand .
Math published in 1882. It was first sung at the 1896 session of the Indian national Congress (INC). .
Its first stanza reads as under: .

Sujalam, Suphalam, Malayaja Sitalam, .
Sasyasyamalam l't1ataram! .
Subhrajyotsna-Pulakitayaminim, .
Phullakusumita-Drumadala-Sobhinim, .
Suhasinim, Sumadhura-Bhasinim, .
Sukhadam, Varadam, Mataram! .

Its English rendering by Shri Aurobindo is as under: .
"Mother, I bow to thee! .
Rich with the hurrying streams, .
Bright with the orchard gleams, .
Cool with thy winds of delight, .
Dark fields waving, mother of might, mother free, .
Glory of moonlight dreams, .
Over thy branches and lordly streams, .
Clad in thy blossoming trees. .
Mother, giver of ease, .
Laughing low and sweet! .
Mother, I kiss thy feet, .
Speaker sweet and low! .
Mother, to thee I bow." (Do you find anything objectionable???) .

The golden moment for the soulstrring song came in 1905, when Lord Curzon ordered partition of Bengal or what came to known as Banga-Bhanga and aggressively patriotic Swadeshi movement and the hitherto little-known song became the rashtramantra overnight and many great revolutionaries like Ashfagullah, Bhagat Singh,Sukhdev,Kanaklata,Kushal Konwar of Asom etc. went to the gallows signing this great patriotic song on their lips. .

It was adopted as the national song by the INC on 7 September, 1905 at the famous Varanasi session and it became the opening note of all the congress meetings in future. Its mus1c was composed by none other than Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore who also composed our national .
