JNUSU Call For Action Against Growing Instances of Rape and.

Molestation!.

4.5.12.

Call For ACTION Against Police INACTION and.

.

DEMAND A SAFER DELHI-NCR FOR WOMEN.

.

Protest Rally 5th May Tomorrow, 11am To 1pm.

Assemble at Ganga Bus Stop at 10 am.

From Mandi House To ITO.

Called by Citizens Collective.

Against Sexual Assault.

.

In Delhi alone, according to official reports, one woman is raped every 18 hours, one woman is molested every 14.

hours. 465 rape cases were registered in 2011 (till December 10th). And even the Delhi Commissioner of Police,.

B.K.Gupta accepts that `Not all rape cases get reported'. In the past few months alone, we have heard of the most.

horrific cases of rape, molestation and other sexual assault even in public places..

.

What is most shameful, apart from the actual incidents of sexual harassment and molestation, is the.

attitude of the Delhi Police and others in power who are supposed to ensure punishment for perpetrators.

of violence on women..

.

Just recently, a sting operation by Tehelka revealed that police officers in the NCR region believe most women `ask.

for rape'; they believe that women who wear modern clothes, have male friends, drink alcohol, are divorced, etc.

are all `provoking' men to rape them..

.

The sting also showed how these cops have a deeply ingrained bias against women from `Darjeeling, Nepal, North.

East', saying that these women are all `prostitutes' who falsely complain of rape. We have also seen senior police.

officers like KPS Gill, Chief ministers like Sheila Dixit and Mamata Banerjee, principals of colleges in Delhi and.

elsewhere showing the very same patriarchal biases prevalent in society. We also have official advertisements.

telling us that "real men" should "protect" women and protest against sexual harassment..

.

The fact of the matter is: what we need is NOT patriarchal `protection' for women, but equal access to public.

spaces. Is it not also the same notion of the need to `protect' women which guides men to control their sisters' or.

daughters' friendships, relationships and mobility; to ask their wives to avoid wearing jeans; and to commit `honour'.

crimes? When a woman is sexually harassed or molested, we need to blame the culprits, and NOT the victim for.

dressing `indecently' and thus inviting rape, for being out late at night, or for `daring' to go to a pub. Real equality.

and dignity means that women have an equal right with men to access public spaces and workplaces without fear,.

irrespective of what time it is, what they are wearing, and whether or not they are accompanied by male companions,.

and who those male companions are. In other words, the concern ought to be to that of gender equality, rather.

than the patriarchal ideology of masculine guardianship and `protection' of women..

.

Moreover, we need to recognize that sexual harassment and violence are crimes of power, they are NOT.

crimes of `lust'. In several cases, instead of the accused being put on trial, it is the woman complainants who face.

a trial of character and morality. Why does this outrageous injustice happen? Even court verdicts that have given.

severe punishments to rapists claim that rape is motivated by `lust'. But sexual harassment, rape, and other forms.

of sexual violence are not motivated by lust, these crimes are an assertion of patriarchal dominance and power..

.

JNUSU appeals to the student community to participate in large numbers in a United Protest Rally tomorrow.

(May 5th) from Mandi House to ITO, to call for action against rape. We demand:.

.

· The Commissioner of Police must publicly take responsibility for the statements made by his.

department/officials (as revealed by Tehelka). He must break his silence on the matter, and state.

clearly that sexual assault is a crime that will not be tolerated..

.

· The Police must immediately respond to complaints of crimes against women and follow the legal.

process. Action must be taken against police personnel who fail to do this..

.
