TEACHERS ofJamia MiUia Islamia have decided to come together and provide finan-cial and legal support to peo-ple detained on charges of terrorism. Teachers have set up the Jamia Teachers' Soli-darity Group and intend to step out of L~e boundary waUs of the un;versity and help those staying in areas ncar the institute. .
"We understand that as a university, the institute can only help out those who arc related to it. For that reason, we have set up an indepen-dent group that wiU help out, financiaUy and lcgaUy, people who are in need," Dr Anu-radha Ghosh, a group mem-ber, told mediapersonc; on Thursday. .
The memberssaid the move has been motivated by the spate of arrests by the police, where poor, young Muslims have been detained "arbitrar-ily" on the bas~of mere suspi-cion, without following the course of law. The group also aUcges that the police have come up with inconsistent ex-planations for the detentions. .
Unhappy over the way the police has handled the Delhi bomb blasts case, the group has called the police opera-tion in the aftermath of the blasts "i\ communal witch hunt" and has demanded an .

Elaborating on how they would help residents living in areas near the university, Ghosh said they will start out by conducting an extensive campaign, including pro-grammes like "Jan Sunwai". ·'We will also collect money and ask other teachers' or-ganisations to join in,n added Ghosh. .
Confusion over guidelines .
Several affidavits and revision of the Ashok Ganguly Committee re-port, which attempted to regulate pre-primary admissions in the re-gion, are pending in courts. As a result, nobody knows how tbe schools will go about conducting the admissions. While guidelines from the Directorate ofEducation do exist, schools have been granted autonomy with regard to imple-mentation of the points system. .
"There have been so many changes in the guidelines, with ap-peals and court directives, that I am not quite sure what the proce-dure will be. We will only be able to start the admission process by mid November at the earliest," Ashutosh Satta, principal of Bloom Public School, said. .
A Delhi High Court order not only banned interviews or interac-tions with the children but has also asked the schools to refrain from ob-servingchildren in any formal or in-formal setting.
