This glacier is the largest glacier in the Pennines and the second largest glacier system in the Alps. It originates at an altitude of 4193 m on the west side of the Monte Rosa massif.

On the left side, in the background, the Monte Rosa massif is visible with its highest peak Dufourspitze at an altitude of 4634 m.
