Season Transition on Mt Greylock

Mt. Greylock in Lanesborough, Massachusetts, is the tallest mountain in the State, its peak being at an elevation of 3491 feet (1064 meters). It's summit is part of the 2144 mile long Appalachian Hiking Trail that runs along the backbone of the Appalachian Mountains from Springer Mountain 1554 miles south in Georgia to Mt. Katahdin 590 miles to the north in Maine.

This photo was taken on a sub-freezing morning during mid to late autumn foliage season, where sunlight drenched the lower 2/3rds of the mountain, and the peak was capped with a thick crown of very heavy fog. The fog literally crystalized on everything it touched, creating a winter wonderland above that towered over colors of autumn in the valley and the lower reaches of the mountain. Here we are looking out the front window of our car as we are near the transition point of frost on the mountain as we descend along the 8 mile scenic mountain road.
