Elandsbaai Flower Carpet

The West Coast of South Africa is well known for its annual display of wild flowers that seem to burst into sight almost out of nowhere during the months of August and September. The wide variety of wild flowers is largely due to the varied topography... fertile valleys contrasting with high mountains, the semi-desert plains of the north contrast with the unique sandveld region near the coast.

The appearance of the flowers is entirely dependent on the winter rains... some years are better than others! The flowers this year are particularly impressive... and they're peaking at this very moment! Catch them if you can!

I captured this photo almost exactly one year ago... just outside the coastal town of Elandsbaai.

Nikon D800, Nikkor 14-24 at 24mm, ISO 100, aperture of f/11, and a 1/160th second exposure.
