Kilmainham Gaol

It was here that the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were incarcerated and later executed by firing squad ouside in the Stone Breaking Yard

This single act did more than anything else to swing the Irish population against the continuance of British rule. The War of Independence and the subsequent Civil War were to follow, ensuring that these rooms were kept at maximum occupancy. The final prisoner to be relased from the prison was Eamon deValera, the future President of Ireland, on 16th July 1924.

Less patriotically this space was used as a film set for films such as The Italian Job and In The Name Of The Father
