Just off the Campo San Giacomo dell' Orio, Venice, Italy. We were starving after another day's trek up and down the bridges of Venice. We found this little place just in time. Having sat down in the terrace outside we made our order and settled into a bottle of red. The wine was good and badly needed...about 40 minutes later we had drank the whole thing, but our food still hadn't arrived. It wasn't the end of the world though, there was nice bread to nibble on. The owner, (a guy called Max, whose folks run Caffe Florian; one of the most exclusive restaurants on Piazza San Marco) came over to us and apologised ; they had completely forgotten our order. Normally I'd be getting very annoyed with this kind of situation, but Max had a good manner about him and placated my inner demons. We ordered another bottle. When the food eventually arrived it blew us away...simple, fresh ingredients done right. Worth waiting for. Then the desserts...I had Pannacotta and strawberries...I'm drooling now just thinking about it. We were well fed and watered when we asked for the bill. Then Max hit us with complementary shots of Lemoncello...which would have been fine had he not followed up with complementary shots of Grappa. Needless to say we got hopeless lost on out way home though the labyrinthine streets of Venice. Again. Nice spot, and by Venetian standards good value too. It may not be around for much longer. Max reckons he's heading to New York soon and taking his restaurant with him.
