Joxer Daly's

On my way up Dorset Street Upper I strolled by the institution that is Joxer Daly's, or Joxers for short. I've passed this place countless times over the years but never ventured in for fear that the True Blue Dubs within wouldn't let me out alive. How wrong I was about that. Sitting up at the bar I got chatting to Ciaran, one of the many friendly old codgers about the place. He gave me the low down; it's owned by a fella called Tom Brown, a Kerryman, but I won't hold that against him. By all accounts he sounds like a very interesting guy. A few years ago he did a charity parachute jump...that's all good, except his chute didn't open - not usually a good thing. He just managed to open the reserve in time, at the expense of some shattered legs, hips and anything else boney that mattered. But he lived, and thanks Padre Pio every day for the blessing. There are literally dozens of Padre Pio images around the place.

Furthermore, his sainted mother passed away a few years ago. Tom holds an anniversary mass for the lady every year in the back of the pub, and supplies free grub and booze to all the locals...gas stuff.

I enjoyed the pint, and the chat, it's a real salt-a-de-earth type Dublin boozer with no frills...I don't know what I was scared of.
