Zayed
SHEIKH ZAYED BIN SULTAN AL NAHYAN (1918 — 2 November 2004), the principal architect of United Arab Emirates (UAE), was the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the UAE for over 30 years (1971-2004). He was considered a relatively liberal ruler. His religious tolerance of Christians and the freedom given Western workers sojourning in the UAE was in marked contrast to most neighbors in the region and exposed him to criticism for other more extremist Arab leaders. Sheikh Zayed was respected around the world for his unifying influence and his drive to make the Emirates one nation. Zayed was considered one of the wealthiest men in the world. A Forbes magazine estimate put his fortune at around USD $24 billion. Dan was honoured to paint him for members of the royal family. He is beloved in the U.A.E. Dan stayed at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi. A 3 Billion $ hotel, where its like Vegas, but with real gold! Dan painted while a violin player, Jihad Akl from Lebanon performed. The audience was very moved by the mix of music and paint. Cindy and Dan enjoyed an afternoon of a “dune bashing” safari. “We were on land cruisers on huge sand dunes, as passengers! An Arabic roller coaster, more or less. We also rented jet ski's and swam in the gulf. Great trip - from there we flew to Denmark for a show. It's like Vegas, but with real gold,” said Dan in his typical understated way.
