1301_1020 Plains Bison
"Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam"... although I love seeing them here, although their space to roam is immense compared to the usual paddocks reserved for this species, the sad reality is that these Buffalo - technically, Bison bison - are the pathetic remnants of what once was. Best estimates say there were once 30 million of them on the Great Plains of North America. By the mid-1880s there were 200 left. So here they are, showcase buffalo, wonderful to see but also a grim reminder of the slaughter that took place here not so long ago. Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan.
