95435 Eagle Butte - 2003

Late winter on Eagle Butte. Jack rabbit tracks in the snow. Looking north. The sun is low to the west, turning the snow pink while the shadows reflect blue sky: colour contrast, light-dark contrast, warm-cold contrast. It was a cracking cold winter day, minus 30 or colder, and about a 30-minute hike to this spot. I timed my trip for the last two hours of the day to take advantage of magic hour lighting. Longer than that would have been impossible, even dangerous. But I knew the terrain, having hiked in there several times in similar conditions. Tripod, 24mm lens, no filter; the camera was a Nikon F100.

Photographed in Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan (Canada); scanned from the original Fujichrome Velvia slide. Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission ©2003 James R. Page - all rights reserved.
