01997 Rainy Montreal at Night - 1969
New image set starting today. Only four shots. I was born in Montreal, grew up northwest of the city, went to university there. This was my city. I was twenty when I set up my tripod downtown on a rainy evening in September. Look at all that neon! Look at the guy driving diagonally!
I was shooting Kodachrome II that day - ISO 25. Don't know how I figured out the exposure; I probably read an article in some photography magazine and followed its advice. I was devouring photo magazines at the time, for both the inspiration and the information.
We're looking along Ste-Catherine Street just west of McGill College Ave. The Capitol Theatre has been described as “Montreal’s finest example of 1920 movie palace opulence.” I saw the occasional movie there; its interior was spectacular. Opened in 1921, it was demolished in 1973 to make way for an office building. When a model of the proposed building was unveiled to the public, people booed.
Photographed in Montreal, Quebec (Canada); scanned from the original Kodachrome II slide. Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission ©1969 James R. Page - all rights reserved.
