2212_1591 Thundering Hooves

We will never witness the great herds that our ancestors saw in the 1830s, but when a small group of about 100 Plains Bison raced past me last month, perhaps I had a hint. A taste. I'd left my flintlock rifle at home, though. so had to shoot with my Nikon D850, 500mm, and 1.4x teleconverter.

I don't know if you can sense the speed. The pieces of snow in the air at the left are from bison in front of these two; the overall hazy look is partly from fine dislodged particles of hoarfrost hanging in the air as the herd charges past.
