2210_0998 Coyote
As promised, here is the other wild canid commonly seen in and around Grasslands. I've spotted this individual three times along the access road to the park, where it was catching scores of grasshoppers in the roadside grasses. With the recent dump of snow, the grasshoppers are gone now, so this Coyote will have to find another survival strategy and I may not see it again. Results from the first two encounters were okay and mediocre, in that order, but third time lucky: the light was good, I was closer, and I came away with a couple of nice shots.
Somehow I like this look a lot. It's well aware of me, but looking into the middle distance, evaluating whatever scents are arriving on the breeze. Who knows what is going through its mind? That's the great mystery we confront when we spend time with another species. There is a gulf. An otherness that can only be guessed at, that makes every encounter special.
Photographed near the boundary of Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan (Canada). Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission ©2022 James R. Page - all rights reserved.
