2109_3082 Treeline with Lyall's Larch
Lyall's Larch (Alpine Larch) is a treeline species in Banff National Park, where it comes to the northern limit of its range. A deciduous conifer, it forms cones like a spruce or fir tree but its needles turn yellow in the fall, before dropping off. They add a spectacular burst of colour to high mountain slopes and passes for a couple weeks each September. I made this shot from the Icefields Parkway, but the gold is more intense up close, when viewed through fewer atmospheric layers.
This concludes my Rockies set of images; tomorrow, a return to the prairie and its critters.
Photographed in Banff National Park, Alberta (Canada). Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission ©2021 James R. Page - all rights reserved.
