1712_1932 Sun Pillar

Things I Like About Winter, Part V: Weather Phenomena.

We stopped to photograph this sun pillar on a very cold morning south of Drumheller. This winter phenomenon occurs when the sun is low on the horizon and countless billions of ice crystals are falling through the air. I would have preferred to find a spot that didn't include railroad tracks in the foreground, but we thought that we might miss it if we waited too long.

It was a moment and we seized it.

Photographed near East Coulee, Alberta (Canada). Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission ©2017 James R. Page - all rights reserved.
