1976-01 Occupied

I didn't print this one back in the old days: all these years later, I see that it may have merit. Four of us had hiked up to Hollyburn Mountain on Vancouver's North Shore, for a taste of winter. Robert Altman's classic film, McCabe And Mrs. Miller, was shot near here in 1970. It's also where I learned to cross-country ski.

At elevations of about 4,000 ft, these slopes are heavily forested, and one of our group, Neil, decided to climb inside a tall, split cedar - probably a Yellow Cedar, which goes by many common names (see tags) - for this photo. Was he supposed to be a troll, or some benign tree spirit? It was too cute for me at the time, but I snapped the photo anyway. Today, I kind of like it; a bit of whimsy is alright with me.

Photographed on Hollyburn Mountain in Cypress Provincial Park, West Vancouver, BC (Canada). Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission ©1976 James R. Page - all rights reserved.
