0607_0203 Hoary Marmot

Today's offering: 5 wildlife shots from the (fairly recent) archives. Someone once scoffed at me, saying "You don't need a telephoto to photograph marmots!" No, you don't. But a telephoto can help isolate a subject and make it stand out by throwing the background out of focus. The trick here was to approach this very common alpine resident seriously and try to make a good shot, not merely a record of its existence. When this little fellow stopped feeding for a moment I noticed its front paws were clasped, as if praying. And - to be honest - I did feel a kind of reverence: gratitude for the privilege of being there in the soft light of early morning, the world fresh and reborn after a rain shower.
