1901_0794 Bleak House

I've driven past this empty house many times. Finally, last winter, I stopped and took some photos. The faded remnants of red and yellow paint were the only colour in a truly bleak landscape. Unlike yesterday's "Starry Foggy Night" photo, this one required no thought whatsoever; it was 100% improvisation, walking toward my subject with a wide angle lens and trying to feel the best way to portray it.

Afterward, I didn't want to look at it. Winter gets tiresome by mid-January, and at that point we are still looking at a couple more months of it. Of course, the severity and duration of winter is what makes spring so sweet on the prairie. And somehow it's easier to process my winter shots at the beginning of winter, ie. now, than when we are in the middle of its deep, dark, icy grip.

To be clear, though, I don't hate winter. It may be the most beautiful season on the prairie. Freezing keeps everything fresh.
