0707_0558 Lightning
I had not intended to include this in the current series of experimental images, but it has been getting some attention lately (new invitations to groups, etc.), nine years after the original upload, so I am shamelessly reposting. A dramatic shot to help wave goodbye to 2018!
An extraordinary storm cloud at sunset, seen from the boundary of Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan. This storm passed by left to right, at a relatively safe distance (safety is an illusion, of course; shooting lightning is incredibly dangerous as these storms are unpredictable). I positioned the tripod, set exposure and focused on infinity... then it was just a matter of keeping a hand on the cable release and trying to react in time to capture a strike.
