Our Cochin Bantam 'Snowy', model for my home-made, hen-shaped, hot water bottle alternative. Trying to be shopping-free and to make everything ourselves, I had a go at making a 'hot water bottle'. The last commercial one we bought burst and covered me with hot water! This is filled with our chicks' organic grain and made from a remnant of organic percale I had over from making sheets. We heated it in the woodburner at 150C/300F for 15 mins and it was snuggly warm. You can also freeze it in a plastic bag for 3 hours in the freezer and make a cold treatment pad. It’s great for all those aches and sprains you get heaving pallets and perches about in cold weather!
