Powerful Owl at the botanic gardens
A small story...
If you look at the photos I posted last night, you'll see that a few of us went on a night-time search for Powerful Owls in a large forestry reserve about 50km from Canberra. We were mighty pleased to find one (the first most of us had ever see) because it is large, impressive, threatened, not seen so often, and not that easy to find even when around. So this was probably the first sighting in this general area for the year, and none have been found in Canberra itself for 15 years.
This morning, two of the same people were on an "introduction to birds" walk at the tamest local bird place, the Botanic Gardens (Piedbutcher was leading it). You can imagine our surprise when we look up into our second tree of the day to see what the noise was about, and there is a Powerful Owl! The first seen in the gardens or anywhere else in Canberra for 15 years.
The coincidence and irony is ... is ... amazing. Within 10 minutes the word was out and now half of Canberra has been to see the no doubt surprised bird.
