Transforming Cash Transfers

ODI called upon the experience and expertise of PhotoVoice, a charity specialising in the delivery of participatory photography programmes, to facilitate participatory photography workshops in Kenya, with orphaned and vulnerable children (OVCs) and Mozambique, with people living with disabilities. As well as being an empowering tool in itself the techniques helped to generate rich insights into the lived experiences of cash transfer beneficiaries. The photographs and the digital stories produced have allowed people all over the world to find out from the individuals themselves, what they think about the money they receive and how it has affected their lives. Before I had my smart uniform I used to wear this dress to school. There was no money to buy a school uniform for me

Without the goats we wouldn't have milk and we would have to buy it which is expensive for us. We use milk to make morning tea

This is my sister Nzisa. She is fifteen years old. We get on well and never argue. She always helps me to do the right thing in life

When I wear this skirt I feel comfortable and decently dressed. If you don't dress decently people will think you go around with older men for money. Some girls do this because they are poor and have no other choice

Having family around you is very important because it gives you a feeling of belonging. I always have people to share stories with and play with. My favourite stories are Wano tales about how people lived in the past

My brother Mutunga is milking the goat, he does the milking every morning. We bought the goat with the money from the cash transfer programme. We used to have strong tea in the morning but now we can have milk in our tea.

My Grandmother is holding the documents from the bank which show that we are saving some of the money for my future

This is a lady who also sleeps on the veranda. I spend a lot of time with her

I spend the money on food but it is a big family and with so many people it does not go far – it is only enough for a little flour, and I could never stop working

In 2005 someone who works at the hospital found a wheelchair in the rubbish and saved it for me. That is what I use now, as although it was bad enough for the hospital to throw away it is much better than my old one

I saved up to get a tap installed for the house, which I didn’t have before

Each day I go along the road to the school where I teach evening class. The school is far away, but I can get there without problem on the road, unless it rains

This is my other daughter Saqina. She often helps me around the house

Each month I travel alone to the place where they give the payments. It is not too far and I can go along the road in my wheelchair
