Adiza at work, soldering metal tubing
‘This photo is beautiful because when I see it, it reminds me that what a man can do, a woman can do better. I chose the construction sector because I was introduced to it by one of my friends. They told me that the training was free with the help of YIEDIE and that I would learn how to be a youth entrepreneur in metal fabrication, working as a welder but combining business skills too. I thought that I would like to create new things and change the system. I had planned to be a nurse and in reality, I thought that welding is something I could learn on the side in order to make more money. But I had finished school and began sending applications out for a white-collar job. I didn't have support from my family for further education and so I continued with the welding training - I got certificates from learning the trade, and even though I didn't go out of my way to get into construction, I eventually asked myself “Why would I choose the career of nursing when it means staying in a windowless building with no job opportunities?”’
