Children at a 'mobile crèche' close to a Delhi construction site

New ODI research reveals a global childcare crisis, with at least 35 million young children left home alone. With more women entering the workforce, mothers often face impossible choices – risk leaving their children home alone, take them into a hazardous workplace, or live in poverty.

 

But some innovative schemes, bringing together non-governmental organisations and businesses, are trying to tackle this.

 

On the outskirts of Delhi, the NGO ‘Mobile Crèches’ sets up crèches close to construction sites, enabling women workers to participate in India’s construction boom. It's a life-line for poorer families working near building sites.
