A girl caring for her younger siblings in Ha Giang Province, Viet Nam
Girls spend more hours per day on domestic work than boys, and are more likely to care for siblings and older family members (World Bank, 2012).
Their families’ expectations can lead to girls spending less time at school than boys and then dropping out. Once girls are ‘idle’ at home, parents and girls themselves often perceive that they are ready for marriage.
