Mother and her child outside their home in Doti District, Nepal
While our research in Nepal identified a trend towards girls marrying later, arranged marriages persist and in some areas increasing elopement or ‘love marriages’ were seen. This is reversing some positive trends and contributing to early marriage as both girls and boys are eloping at a very young age.
In many cases, young people are forming relationships through intermediaries, such as friends or relatives, maintaining relationships using mobile phones and then running away to get married.
